Help at Home

Help at Home

I need some extra help at home and want to choose the help I get.

We understand that people feel comfortable being in their own home, maintaining their independence and doing what they love. We work with clients and their families to make sure the care and help at home they receive matches their wants and needs.

There are many help and support options. Clients may just need a hand with the home or garden, or care from a nurse or someone to help with shopping or going to the movies for instance. Whatever the need, we can help.

Our services extend across metropolitan Adelaide and out to the Eyre Peninsula, Barossa Valley, Mid North, Lower North and Yorke Peninsula.

Services are offered both in-home and within the community

They include:

Our staff can help with daily tasks including house cleaning, washing dishes, washing clothes and ironing. Leaving more time for the fun things!

We can assist with personal care. This may include showering, teeth and denture care, shaving, dressing and getting in and out of bed. We can also help by preparing meals.

We have a green thumb and love getting out in the garden. We can help with mowing, weeding, pruning and hedge trimming. We can also pick your favourite flowers to display and enjoy.

We are also very handy and can change light bulbs, replace tap washers and more.

We can make your home safe, comfortable and easy to get around. We are happy to help with installing grab rails, ramps, safety aids and more.

Need help getting to the shops or visiting friends? Our staff can drive clients to appointments or social events. We can also book a taxi or provide taxi vouchers to use later.

Our staff are very friendly and always available for a chat. We can accompany clients to the cinema, to the cafe or just pop in for a chat.

We also run a variety of social support groups:

  • social catch ups
  • emotional wellbeing
  • confidential counselling
  • listen to presentations and discussions

Qualified Nurses can visit clients in their home and make them feel safe and comfortable. They can help with managing wounds, medication, continence and more.

They can carry out health assessments and reviews, and help with monitoring blood pressure, oxygen levels and more.

Our Nurses are a great support for people who are recovering from injury or illness and need some help to get back on their feet.

We think carers are amazing and deserve time off every now and then to rest and recharge. Our respite options give carers the opportunity to get to appointments, go on a social outing or go on a holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to some frequently asked questions about help at home services at Helping Hand.

It is normal to be unsure when thinking about arranging support at home – it is a big step. Additionally, people may be worried that an assessment means a fast-track to a nursing home. The reality is that having an assessment to arrange home care services can help you to remain independent at home for longer, and can even improve your quality of life. You can get started by calling My Aged Care on 1800 100 422.

Helping Hand also offers an alternative – Elevate by Helping Hand – which doesn’t require any assessment. All home care services we offer can be provided through Elevate, through a pay-per-service hourly fee arrangement.

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) supports older people who are still managing well, but want some extra assistance, at home. Home Care Packages (HCP) provide more care and support services on an ongoing basis, for people whose needs are more intensive or complex. Both programs give you support to stay at home, but there are some differences:

CHSP:

  • choose from a set menu of services – there isn’t much flexibility
  • only pay for the services you use
  • dip in and out of the program as you need things
  • have your eligibility assessed by the Regional Assessment Service (RAS).

HCP:

  • a Home Care Coordinator helps you understand the system and work out a care plan that suits your individual needs and preferences
  • you get your own funds to use and can decide how to spend it, rather than choosing from a menu
  • once you have a package, it stays in place for the long term
  • your eligibility is assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).

The cost of help at home services varies from person to person, depending on what services you are receiving, and your own personal financial situation. The Government may contribute toward your care costs, and you may be asked to contribute towards them too if you can afford it. My Aged Care provides an overview of the costs involved on their website, and we also publish our fees for Home Care Packages and Elevate by Helping Hand on our website.

The My Aged Care website is the starting point for everyone who is looking for information on government funded services.

We understand that having a conversation with a loved one about getting older can be challenging and emotional – for everyone. We’ve developed a series of short films, where you can follow one family’s experiences, from different points of view, as they find themselves making decisions about aged care.
